Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology?

I grew up thinking of food as a cultural and spiritual force that brings people together. It is incredibly rewarding to help people overcome obstacles to enjoy this basic happiness. I firmly believe that each person’s body is different, with its own quirks and nuances, and each patient has their own wants, needs, and expectations. Because the gastrointestinal system is so diverse and complex, no two days are ever the same which keeps me on my toes. Some days, I get to be a detective, some days I am hands-on doing procedures, and some days I just help my patients by educating, reassuring and handholding.

What are your areas of special interest and expertise within gastroenterology?

My areas of expertise sort of found me along the way. By listening to my patients and developing real human relationships and trust with them, I learned how to figure out the underlying problem for many of their presenting symptoms and help control them. I have become specialized in bloating, constipation, pelvic floor dysfunction, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I also care for patients with all other typical gastrointestinal complaints – such as acid reflux, gallbladder problems, and diarrhea – and I ensure my patients have proper colon cancer screening, which is extremely rewarding.

Do you have any special honors, recognition, or achievements in your medical career that you would like to share?

My greatest professional honor was receiving the Teacher of the Year award from the Mount Sinai Gastroenterology fellows because I remember how much my teachers whom I nominated for this award meant to me and shaped me as a gastroenterologist.

What do you and your family enjoy doing during your spare time?

We love spending time with friends and family, road trips, cooking, and time at the beach. This summer we plan to learn how to fish, kayak and paddleboard.
